On Saturday, March 6, DGA Special Projects presented "The Digital Intermediate Revolution Never Die Alone: An Indie Case Study." The seminar focused on the use of the digital intermediate (DI) by director Ernest Dickerson for his recent Fox Seachlight release, Never Die Alone, starring DMX and David Arquette. Under the Influence of Paul Mazursky's Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice |
by Nancy Kapitanoff
When Paul Mazursky made his directorial debut with Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, he was under the influence of Fellini, Sturges, Lubitsch and The Sixties.
"I had seen in Time magazine a picture of Fritz Perls, a gestalt therapist, sitting in a hot tub with five or six people who were naked up at Esalen. That's when I said to [my wife] Betsy, 'maybe there's a movie,' and we went to Esalen. We did a 24 or 48 hour marathon. We were the only couple there.

Stephen Frears: Meshing American and British Filmmaking with Style and Substance |
by Kevin Lewis
Stephen Frears was in an impish mood following the screening of his new prize-winning film Dirty Pretty Things at a July 16 DGA sponsored event held in the Florence Gould Auditorium of the Alliance Française/French Institute in New York City.
In typical "get-on-with-it, it's-only-a-movie" British style, Frears downplayed any serious analysis of his directorial methods to the discussion's moderator, director Glenn Gordon Caron. Instead, he threw bouquets to his collaborators the actors, cinematographer Chris Menges and writer Steve Knight.

City of Lights 2003 |
by David Geffner
The clouds that drifted over Franco-American geopolitical relations were certainly on the minds of the City of Lights/City of Angels organizers as they kicked off the festival's seventh year [April 8-12]. But they could not dampen the enthusiasm audiences gave to the slate of eleven French features, each one preceded by a French short. Ranging from a solemn examination of two brothers facing death to a Parisian butcher hiding Jewish orphans in WWII, this year's line-up was as diverse as any in the festival's history. City of Lights/City of Angels partners DGA, L'ARP, MPA, SACEM, UNIFRANCE, WGA, and the Consulat General de France of Los Angeles hosted the opening night reception, which was followed by the screening of Laurent Bouhnik's 24 Hours in the Life of a Woman. |

DGA Opposes Council Motion on Film Permitting |
by Ted Elrick
At a packed, occasionally heated May 12 hearing before the Los Angeles City Council Education and Neighborhoods Committee, representatives from the DGA, SAG, IATSE, MPAA, AICP, AFMA, Teamsters Local 399 and most of the studios unanimously raised opposition to a motion by City Councilwoman Cindy Miscikowski that would establish a committee of neighborhood councils and community organizations to advise the City Council on filming issues. Passage of such a motion would complicate the film permitting process in Los Angeles, potentially adding another bureaucratic layer to the approval process.

by David Geffner

Next year may be Visual Communications' (VC) biggest celebration yet with the arrival of the 20th Anniversary of its Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film & Video Festival. But independent filmmakers invited to a VC luncheon hosted by the DGA and featuring speakers like Bobby Roth, Henry Chan and Jay Chandrasekhar, held high hopes as this year's festival got underway (May 1-8 at the DGA, Arclight Hollywood, David Henry Hwang Theater, and Aratani/Japan America Theater).
"Directing is the loneliest job on the set," Henry Chan said before a group of first-time directors. "As an Asian-American director, it's even lonelier.
